Submit ReviewRGD peptide is a potent integrin inhibitor (IC50 values are 89, 335 and 440 nM for αvβ3, α5β1 and αvβ5, respectively). RGD is the minimal recognition sequence for integrin binding found in many extracellular matrix (ECM) and serum proteins. RGD peptide is used for directing association of various cell types with diverse biomaterials. The functionality of RGD peptide is usually maintained throughout the processing and sterilization steps required for biomaterials synthesis. RGD peptide can be incorporated into hyaluronic acid hydrogel for human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) delivery. RGD peptide significantly increases hMSC spreading and protein secretion under standard or ischemic culture conditions. RGD peptide can also be incorporated into alginate bioink for 3D bioprinting of MSCs onto cartilage templates for bone organogenesis.
